In advance of the airshow, why not gain an exclusive insight into how Dublin City Council (DCC) utilises drone technology to enhance its services to citizens?

Dublin City Council has been at the forefront of aerial innovation since 2017. Over the years, drones have proven to be an invaluable asset to the organisation—drastically reducing operational costs, saving time, and significantly improving safety for both staff and the public during complex city operations.

The Drone & Urban Air Mobility Strategy

To build on this success, DCC launched its visionary Drone and Urban Air Mobility Strategy 2024–2029 in May 2024. This forward-thinking strategy coordinates the development of drone services across the city and prepares Dublin for the future of Urban Air Mobility—the eventual movement of goods and people across our urban skies.

A Centre of Excellence

A core element of this strategy was the creation of a dedicated Drone Unit, established in June 2024 within the Survey and Mapping Division. This unit comprises a team of pilots with the highest level of expertise in drone operations and serves as the focal point for DCC’s strategic planning and ongoing technological innovation.
By centralising expertise and resources, the Drone Unit aims to:

  • Streamline City Operations: Driving forward the adoption of emerging technologies in daily local authority tasks.
  • Manage Complexity: Navigating internal and external drone operation challenges while ensuring strict compliance with safety regulations.
  • Scale for the Future: Growing in line with technical and regulatory advancements to establish the Unit as a leading national centre of excellence for local authority drone services.
